Around the world, millions of people face poverty, lacking decent shelter, food, sanitation and medical care. Inequitable social structures and negative attitudes towards people living in poverty often pose barriers to improved social and economic security. Due to systemic racism, poverty often disproportionately affects those who are Black, Indigenous and people of colour. A human rights approach to poverty is not only about charity. It recognizes the dignity of those who are experiencing poverty, aims to end stigma and discrimination against them, and empowers them to participate in decisions that affect their lives.
